1930s

The 1930s saw a revival in knitting. For many people during the Great Depression, knitting was the only way they could afford to keep themselves and their families clothed.  Pamphlets and magazine articles on how to “reweave” were widely disseminated, documenting how to darn socks, patch knit clothing, repurpose worn knits, and perform other clothing repairs.  Some women took in darning to earn extra money, and many traded knitting and/or darning services for food.
